Believe in yourself!
“Know your value; constantly keep
yourself headed in the right direction. It may not be easy at
times. Hell, nothing is easy! But in
the struggle you will find a stronger sense of who you are,”

I bet you still believe that you will
be a great and famous person someday, but you lack the
skills to do anything in particular.
By the time you are done reading this, you will probably
wish you could write like me because
your mind will trick you to believe I have such wonderful
eloquence to arrange twenty six
letters of the English alphabet. It’s still a derogatory to call
myself a writer! See what I mean? We
doubt ourselves too much. It’s not that we don’t have
the skills or the potential, we do!
We just fear to untap new opportunities; we like postponing
and most fatal of all, we think we
can’t make it.
While out on a field trip, I learnt
something new which redirected my life and way of thinking in
a big way.
After making several rounds, taking
notes on the important facts about the trees in Kakamega
forest, we were allowed a
thirty-minute break. Relieved, we settled under this huge mahogany
tree and embarked on chatting on how
the whole experience had been so far.
Interrupted by our lecturer, Prof.
Mirugi, we shifted our attention to him. He stood on a rock
that was erected few inches from
where we had spread out. From his coat pocket, he took
out a note then asked; “Who wants
this one-thousand shilling note?” we all raised our hands
indicating a ‘yes’.
Later, he folded the note twice, his
hands holding it out, “Who wants this note?” still,
everyone’s hand was up.
Next, he folded the note four times,
this time it appeared much smaller. Then asked one more
time, “Do you people still want this
note?” not shaken, we all nodded in agreement.
Lastly, he let loose his grip on the
note and it fell on to the ground. He stepped on it, so that it
looked scrambled, then came up for
the fourth time, “Is there anyone who still wants this one- thousand shilling
note?” in unison, all hands were held up.
After this exercise that didn’t make
much sense to us, he said, “No matter the state or shape
of this note, every one of you still
wanted it. Why? Because you all know its value. That also
applies in real life. Despite the
mockery, hate or even problems you may have gone through.
Regardless of how many times you may
have tripped and fallen into that dungeon called
misfortunes, we must search deep in
us for this hope, strength and courage. We ought to seek
that wisdom which will usher light
and enable us know our value (read worth), because at the
end of the day, you are more than
this one-thousand shilling note... you are priceless!”
